The steps below cover everything in this lesson. Follow them in your own Kade, then check yourself at the end.

Before you start

  • You are signed in as the Owner. Only the owner can restore.
  • Your owner password and your backup password. Without the backup password, no backup can be restored.
  • A backup: one of your restore points, or a backup file (for example on a USB drive).

Step by step

1. Open Backup & restore

Go to Administration › Backup & restore. Restore points lists every backup Kade can find on this PC's destinations, with its date, PC, destination and whether it was Manual or Automatic.

2. Start the restore

Press Restore…, or click a restore point in the list. The Restore this PC from a backup window opens at Step 1 of 4.

3. Choose the backup

Under Choose a restore point, click the one you want. To use a file instead, press Pick a file…, choose the backup file and press Use this file. Kade shows which backup you picked, such as Backup of a date from PC A.

4. Enter both passwords

Type your Owner password and the Backup password, then press Verify and prepare. Kade checks the backup and prepares it. This can take a moment.

5. Restart, or cancel

When the backup is verified, Kade explains what happens next: this PC restarts and gets a new device code, and the current data is kept aside. Newer changes from your other PCs sync back after the restart. Press Restart now to finish, or Cancel restore to keep your current data.

6. Starting a new PC from a backup

After a disk failure, or to move to a new PC, install Kade and choose Restore from a backup in the setup wizard. Pick your backup file and enter the owner and backup passwords. Kade restarts with your shop's data and gives this PC its own device code.

Good to know

  • Kade refuses a backup from another business, and a backup made by a newer version of Kade: install that version first.
  • A wrong owner password is refused and written to the audit log. A wrong backup password changes nothing.
  • Older backups still restore with the backup password they were made with, even if you have changed it since.
  • Restore works even when Kade is read-only after the trial.

Try it yourself

  1. Open Administration › Backup & restore and look at your Restore points.
  2. Press Restore… and choose the newest restore point.
  3. Look at the summary in step 2, then press Cancel. Nothing changes.

Recap

Restore from Administration › Backup & restore › Restore…: choose a restore point or file, enter your owner and backup passwords, verify, then restart. Your old data is kept aside, and newer changes from your other PCs sync back.
