The steps below cover everything in this lesson. Follow them in your own Kade, then check yourself at the end.

Before you start

  • You are signed in as the Owner or a Manager.
  • Your printer is switched on, has paper and is connected to this PC by USB, by network cable or by a serial cable.
  • For a USB receipt printer on Windows, install the printer's Windows driver first, so it appears as a Windows printer.

Step by step

1. Open Printers & hardware

Go to Administration › Printers & hardware. It lists this PC's printers, cash drawer and scanner, with their Type, Connection and Status. Each PC has its own hardware, so set up every till separately.

2. Add the receipt printer

Press Add device and choose the Type Receipt printer. Give it a Name, such as Counter printer. Under Connection, choose USB (or Serial) and press Find printers, then pick yours. Or choose Network (LAN) and type the Printer address, such as 192.168.1.50. Kade uses port 9100 when you leave the port out. Scan network looks for printers on your shop network.

3. Choose the paper and printing options

Pick the Paper width: 80 mm or 58 mm. Under Printing, Raster (any language) prints every script; Text mode (faster, Latin only) is quicker for English-only receipts. Choose the Paper cut (Partial, Full or None). Tick Use this one by default on this PC and press Save.

4. Print a test page

Press Print test page on the printer's row. When it works, the status shows Ready. If Kade says The printer did not answer. Check that it is on, connected and has paper., check the cable, the power and the paper, then try again.

5. Add the cash drawer

Plug the drawer's cable into the receipt printer's drawer port. Press Add device, choose Cash drawer: its connection is Opens through the receipt printer. Pick the Drawer pin (Pin 2 or Pin 5), save, then press Test open. If the drawer stays shut, try the other pin.

6. Test the barcode scanner

Most scanners plug in by USB and type like a keyboard. Add a Barcode scanner: its connection is USB (keyboard mode). Save it, then press Test scanner. Click the box and scan any barcode. Kade says Scanner detected (keyboard mode). If it says the code was typed on the keyboard, check that the scanner ends each scan with Enter.

7. Check your print templates

Go to Administration › Templates. It lists the layouts Kade prints with: receipts for 58 mm and 80 mm paper, invoices, quotations, purchase orders, payment receipts and labels. Select one and press Open sample to see it filled with your business details. The logo and footer come from Company profile, where Print the logo on receipts and documents turns the logo on or off.

Good to know

  • Setting up hardware needs the Owner or a Manager. Cashiers can't change it.
  • On Windows, A4 documents and the A4 test page open as a PDF: print them from there.
  • When no receipt printer is set up, Print receipt starts off at the till, and the payment window says how to add one.
  • A customer display isn't set up in Printers & hardware in this version.

Try it yourself

  1. Add your receipt printer and press Print test page.
  2. Add your cash drawer and press Test open.
  3. Add your scanner, press Test scanner and scan a barcode from any product.
  4. Open Administration › Templates, select the receipt for your paper width and look at the sample.

Recap

Add each device in Administration › Printers & hardware on the PC it's connected to, then test it: a test page, a drawer opening and a scan. The drawer opens through the receipt printer, and the templates take your logo and footer from Company profile.
