The steps below cover everything in this lesson. Follow them in your own Kade, then check yourself at the end.
Before you start
- Kade is installed on the PC, and its data folder is still empty, so Kade opens the setup wizard instead of the sign-in screen.
- You are the owner. Have your business name, address, phone and (if registered) tax number to hand.
- Decide where backups will go: a folder or second drive on this PC.
Step by step
1. Start
The first time Kade opens on a PC, it asks how to start. Choose Create a new business. The wizard walks you through five steps: Start, Business, Owner, Backup and Data.
2. Your business
Type your Business name, Address and Phone. They appear on every receipt and invoice.
3. Country and tax
Pick your Country, and Kade fills in the currency, time zone and financial year. If you're registered for tax, tick Registered for tax and add your Tax number.
4. The owner
Next, the owner. Your PIN signs you in each day. Your password unlocks admin tasks and recovers the business.
5. Backup password
Backups are encrypted with a Backup password of their own. If you lose this password, backups cannot be restored.
6. Backup folder
Choose where backups go in Backup folder, then press Test. Kade won't go on until the folder is writable, and shows Folder is writable when it is.
7. Your data
The last step is your data. Start empty: you can import items and customers from Excel once setup is done, from Inventory › Items and Customers › Import.
8. Finish
Press Finish. Kade creates your business and signs you straight in to Home.
Good to know
- Your PIN must be 4 to 6 digits, not all the same or in a row (not 1111 or 1234). Your password needs at least 10 characters.
- The backup password also needs at least 10 characters, and must be different from your password. Keep it somewhere safe.
- A shop registered for tax gets its country's tax rates. In Sri Lanka, that is VAT at 18%, and the financial year starts in April.
- The Start step also offers Join an existing business (for a second PC) and Restore from a backup. Use those only when your shop's data already exists.
Try it yourself
- On a new PC, choose Create a new business and fill in your real business details.
- Set your PIN, password and a backup password you will remember, and write the backup password down somewhere safe.
- Pick a backup folder, press Test, and finish with Start empty.
Recap
Five steps take a new PC from empty to signed in: start, business, owner, backup and data. Kade won't finish without a working backup folder, and your backup password is the one thing you must never lose.
